Tailor made programme for technicians
AIMS
Supporting scientific capacity building processes in developing countries in the field of environmental protection of inland-water ecosystems, conservation of their biodiversity and sustainable management of natural resources.

OBJECTIVES
  • Upgrading theoretical knowledge
  • Learning & application of scientific methods and techniques
  • Practising of the use- maintenance- and administration of scientific equipment
PROGRAMME OUTLINE
The training programme is a truly tailor-made 4 months programme, which is designed according to the specific needs of the employing home institute of the participants. Special emphasis is laid on practical work and laboratory sessions.
The training programme consists of two modules: (A) General Module - general refreshment on underlying basics & principles and (B) Specific Module, where participants are integrated into experienced research teams. Specific excursions and workshops can be organized additionally. All programme modules are selected & compiled according to specific requirements and demands.
No standard programme outline can be stated, since it is a tailor-made programme, however, some case examples for topic areas are:

(A) General module
  • Biology: taxonomy and ecology of algae, macrophytes, zooplankton, macro– microfauna, benthos and fish, functioning of ecosystems (energy flow, production biology, bottom-up versus top-down, trophic interactions), biological indicators.
  • Chemistry: physico-chemical properties of water, nutrients analysis, water quality analysis, abiotic – biotic interrelationships.
  • Sampling techniques: sampling design and practical aspects.
  • Data handling and analysis: basic computer skills, computer aided data analysis
  • Laboratory analysis and methods: in various fields of limnology (chemical & biological analysis), laboratory organisation and management, laboratory safety and hazards
(B) Specific module
  • Microbial ecology (bacteria, protozoa, etc.)
  • Algae & primary production
  • Zooplankton & secondary production
  • Fish ecology (sampling methods & techniques, feeding ecology, fish stock assessment, fish growth, artificial breeding, fish-parasites)
  • Water quality (chemical, bacteriological & biological)
